a small riddle

this took me two days to convince my fellow workers to see the right answer and some are still confused.

Three men stay at a hotel for the night. The innkeeper charges thirty dollars per room per night. The men rent one room; each pays ten dollars. The bellhop leads the men to their room. Later, the innkeeper discovers he has overcharged the men and asks the bellhop to return five dollars to them. On the way upstairs, the bellhop realizes that five dollars can't be evenly split among three men, so he decides to keep two dollars for himself and return one dollar to each man. At this point, the men have paid nine dollars each, totalling 27. The bellhop has two, which adds up to 29. Where did the thirtieth dollar go?

The premise is wrong. Each paid 9 which does equal 27 but why would you add what the bellboy has and now what the innkeeper has (because he doesn't have 27 either) so the three amounts aren't related in that way. The men paid 9 each of which 2 went to the bellhop and 25 went to the innkeeper.

I already gave the answer. You can't add the bellhops money or you'd have to add the innkeeper's as well. There are three amounts in play. The original $30 is irrelevant. The total floating around is 3 x 9 = $27. The bellhop and the Innkeeper have amounts that equal that total.
If we each gave Liddia $5 and then she gave $3 to Kira would we want to know why there were 18 dollars out there? No, because there aren't. They are not related that way.

I had it right. It is the wording and addition that are wrong. It says they each paid 9 dollars for the room, which really they didn't, because the bellhop kept two dollars. So what you would add to get the 30 is actually the 27 (you do not add the two the bellhop has as it is included in the the 27), then the three they got back, this will take you back to the original thirty, there is no missing dollar.

Robin was wrong the first time, I erased her answer so not to embarass her:

She said: a robber stole the dollar and they didn't tell about it in the question???

Now she is playing off of suzy's answer to try to look smart but we all know how she really is.
